Let’s begin this post with the common phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover”.
The person who came up with this phrase clearly knew shungite.
Shungite is a particularly strong stone and some people call it the "miracle stone"
Its only place of origin is in the area of Lake Onega, Russia.
There is archaeological evidence from the 6th century BC that Lake Onega was a sacred place for the locals, the medical people and the shamans.
They would use this stone the same way that herbalists work with wild plants.
Later testimonies take us to the 16th century. The first written mention of the healing properties of shungite was in the writings of Ivan the Terrible, Tsar of Russia and of his son, Feodor The first.
In 1714, they built a factory near the lake that used copper and lead for its products.
Following the prolonged exposure to lead at the factory, the workers fell ill, but were cured with the help of water from the nearby spring.
After this incident the Tsar, Pyotr the Great, ordered the construction of a medical spa on these springs.
And he also ordered his soldiers to always carry a piece of shungite inside their water canteens. This was to prevent intestinal problems and diarrhea.
Pyotr was the first tsar to order the construction of a convalescent home where shungite was found.
The lake has fresh water springs and Pyotr used this water for healing purposes.
After his death the spa was abandoned and forgotten by all except the locals.
Only in 1930 did the subject reopen when a study of the water there showed that the percentage of iron oxide it contained was among the highest measured compared to other similar places where water was also used as a spa and cure.
The start of World War II stopped all plans to build a second spa and further research on the water and its healing properties.
Let's go even further back in time... About 3.5 - 3.8 billion years ago the first life on Earth was created. These were the unicellular life-forms, or microbes.
The shungite was created about 2 billion years ago, with the help of these primal life forms.
They sank to the bottom of the sea and with the help of sand, salts, minerals, extreme temperature and the movement of the tectonic plates, these microbes were petrified.
Shungite is made from a carbon allotrope that is quite special and is called Fullerene.
A lot of energy was needed for the process of making the fullerene carbon,
Some say that this energy was created from very strong lightning that struck the ground. There are those who say that this energy came from a meteor that hit the Earth where the lake is today. There is another version that says the shungite came from the sky as a meteor.
Carbon is one of the building blocks of life and has wonderful properties.
Fullereness are an allotrope of pure carbon, which can be spherical, elliptical or tubular.
Shungite is made from 70% to 98% carbon.
I would also like to point out that for the discovery of "Fullerene" in 1996, the scientist received a Nobel Prize.
From 1960 until today there have been studies on the healing properties of Shungite.
Treatments done with shungite powder ointments have helped people suffering from psoriasis and arthritis.

In October 2006 a scientific conference was held in Russia called: Shungite and the protection of human life.
In the conference, the scientists shared the results of their research on the subject of shungite and its medicinal properties.
Studies have shown that shungite is antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and protects against electromagnetic radiation (!)
Some people speculate that these carbon allotropes are the reason why shungite has such special healing properties.
In addition, shungite stone has electrical conductivity.
And as I mentioned before, it protects against electromagnetic radiation.
All these and more were the reasons why they created the Shungite chambers, baths and spa.
There are chambers like this in Russia, Estonia and I'm sure in more places around the world.
